Relationship Between Nutrition And Mental Health

Mood food – the relationship between nutrition and mental health

When we think about wellness, we pay attention to eating healthy foods, being active and having enough rest. However, our well being includes more than the physical aspect. Mental health is becoming more and more important these days.  The question is: in what ways food influences our mood? Well, the connections are numerous. There are certain food components which should be considered. For example, glucose from potatoes, grains, and similar carbohydrate-rich foods are responsible for the serotonin production in our brain. This serotonin is a neurotransmitter in charge of balancing mood and anxiety. Therefore, try to eat whole wheat bread, pasta, oatmeal to keep the level of glucose in the blood. Also, healthy fats have an important role in mental health. Some foods are essential for their positive role in our nutrition. Eating fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fish can protect our bodies from depression. Fast food, on the other hand, is connected with the risk of increasing depression. However, food does not need to take up a lot of our ’mental real estate’. We should try to listen our body and in that way, our mental health will be the best.
